Nintendo Files Patent For Game Boy Emulation

Nintendo has filled in the US a patent application for "Hand-held Video Game Platform Emulation"
Now, what must be mentioned is that this is a divisional application, which is a continuation of a a pending application of that patent, with some claims changed and with less references. So it is not entirely new, but it is filed this year and not in 2003. Like with their old application.

Here is the Source for this patent which off course entails a lot more detail about it.

I won't include the detailed description as it just describes a bunch of modes and instructions for emulation on various platforms. But if you are interested in that, it's of course readily available at the link.

Don't be fooled into thinking that this is good news, as the case may be it is highly likely to be a protection-of-interests patent, by patenting the emulation of their platforms, they essentially prohibit the development of emulators.

Now if Nintendo successfully patents emulators, it will be only in the US, and not on Europe. Laws change and differ, so for now we are partially safe.
What could this mean for the current emulation scene?
Well, this is definitely bad news from almost every perspective, however it will take years to claim and they have to be very specific in what they are claiming a patent on.

The fact of the matter is, Nintendo does not need a patent to make emulators and start selling their old games in digital form, they already can do that, that's why it leads us to believe this is an attempt at stopping piracy and the development of emulators.
